Life is a series of cycles from birth through infancy, toddler-hood, pre-adolescence, adolescence, young adulthood, adulthood, middle-age, golden years and death. How one responds at the start of life's journey is invariably how one continues to respond to life's challenges in somewhat adapted ways. These adapted responses are not always the most effective. Unfortunately, it is often only during a crisis or a challenging developmental phase in one's life that one senses something is amiss and realises that generally one does not have the skills to deal with life any differently. Marie* stated after being in therapy for three months: "I have caused myself so much unnecessary pain as I have gone through life repeating the dysfunctional relationship cycles of my childhood. Being in therapy feels like a light has been turned on allowing me to see a more effective way of being/living."
In today's society where 'being strong' and 'I just have to cope' attitudes are prevalent, individuals hold on to their concerns and vulnerabilities for fear of appearing weak. They may discuss their problems with a trusted friend or family member but it is often beyond the scope of these persons to assist or know what is best for the person in crisis. It is at these times however when counselling or psychotherapy has proven to be more effective. Effective therapy has long term consequences in enabling the individual to understand the possible root cause of their emotional discomfort; in assisting individuals find uniquely different ways of dealing with life's challenging issues and managing the difficult emotions which initially brought them into therapy.
